PodSpot

Home Find AirPods without Find My

Find your AirPods when Find My shows nothing.

A map that is empty or out of date doesn't mean your AirPods are gone. If they have battery, they are still sending a Bluetooth signal, and PodSpot can follow it.

The short answer

AirPods that are switched on and have battery keep sending a Bluetooth signal, whatever a map shows. Go back to where you last had them and open PodSpot on your iPhone. It lists nearby devices as Near or Far. Tap your AirPods, walk slowly toward a stronger signal, and play a sound from PodSpot once they are connected.

Follow the signal with PodSpot

PodSpot reads the Bluetooth signal your AirPods send right now. It does not need Find My to be turned on.

  1. Go back to the last place you remember using your AirPods.
  2. Open PodSpot on your iPhone and start a scan. Each device in the list is labeled Near or Far.
  3. Tap your AirPods to open the signal screen. The signal percentage rises as you get closer.
  4. Walk slowly, one room at a time. Walls and furniture weaken the signal, so moving around works better than standing still.
  5. Once they are close and connected to your iPhone, play a sound from PodSpot. Then save the spot so it is listed under Previous Locations.

What PodSpot can and can't do

A map shows where your AirPods were last reported. PodSpot shows how close they are right now, from the signal they send, which is what you need for the last few metres.

PodSpot doesn't use Apple's Find My network. It only reads the Bluetooth signal nearby, so it can't see AirPods that are switched off, out of battery or out of range, and it usually can't see earbuds sealed inside their case. Some charging cases (AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4 with ANC, and AirPods 5) advertise their own signal, listed under the same name as the earbuds. Classic AirPods cases do not.

PodSpot can play a sound on your AirPods while they are connected to your iPhone. Play Sound does not work on the charging case.

Before you start

  • Charge your iPhone; you may be walking around for a while
  • Put any other earbuds you own back in their case so the list stays short
  • Search soon, because the signal stops when the battery runs out
  • Start where you last used them, then widen the search one room at a time
  • Look low: floors, under furniture and down the sides of seats

Questions people ask

Can I find AirPods without Find My?

Yes, if they are switched on, have battery and are within Bluetooth range. PodSpot reads the signal they send and shows it as a percentage that rises as you get closer, so you can walk toward them room by room. It can't help once the battery is empty, because then there is no signal to read.

Is there an alternative to Find My for lost AirPods?

Yes, for the last few metres. A map shows where your AirPods were last reported, and it can be empty or out of date. PodSpot reads the Bluetooth signal your AirPods send right now and shows how close you are. It doesn't use Apple's Find My network, so it works even if Find My was never set up on them. The earbuds need some charge left to send that signal.

Can PodSpot find AirPods that are dead?

No. AirPods with no battery send no Bluetooth signal, so PodSpot can't see them, and neither can any other scanner. Start with the places you last used them. Once you find them, save the spot in PodSpot so it is listed under Previous Locations and you know where to look first next time.

Can PodSpot see AirPods inside their case?

Usually not, so take the earbuds out before you search. Some charging cases (AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4 with ANC, and AirPods 5) advertise their own signal, which PodSpot lists under the same name as the earbuds. Classic AirPods cases do not send a signal PodSpot can read.

Can PodSpot play a sound on my AirPods?

Yes, while they are connected to your iPhone. PodSpot plays the sound through the earbuds so you can hear where they are. If they are not connected, follow the signal percentage on the signal screen instead, as it rises when you get closer. Play Sound does not work on the charging case.
